Tucson Spotlight is partnering with San Miguel High School to host three student interns this fall, expanding the newsroom’s commitment to developing the next generation of journalists.

San Miguel, a private Catholic high school on Tucson’s south side, is part of the national Cristo Rey Network, which combines rigorous academics with real-world work experience through its Corporate Work Study Program. The school provides students with opportunities to gain professional experience while earning support for their education.

Through the partnership, San Miguel students will gain hands-on experience in digital journalism. They'll produce a weekly Spanish-language newsletter and create content for Tucson Spotlight’s and El Foco de Tucson’s Instagram and TikTok pages, strengthening Spotlight’s bilingual coverage and social media presence.

“Our goal is to create real pathways into journalism for students who live here and know our community,” said Tucson Spotlight publisher Caitlin Schmidt. “Even if they don’t choose journalism as a career, this experience will show them how local news works and why it matters to a community.”

With the addition of the San Miguel students and four new University of Arizona interns, Tucson Spotlight’s team has grown to 21 members, including staff, freelance reporters and student journalists.
